The Ancient eastern city of Enugu

On our expedition to the Coal city of Enugu, the heart beat of the eastern state of Nigeria, we stopped by the Independent layout..A significant location in the history of the state and the far wide eastern region
Independence Layout, Enugu, the highbrow section of Enugu, the coal city, was carved out by the post-independence administration of the legendary late Dr. Michael Okpara, the then premier of Eastern Region. Okpara, after Nigeria’s Independence, expanded Enugu with further acquisitions for physical development.

Apart from the present Independence Layout which was primarily carved out to mark Nigeria’s Independence, Okpara acquired and developed more areas such as Uwani North, Uwani South and Uwani Central, Bridge Head Layout, Emene Industrial Layout, Housing Estate, Abakpa and the Trans Ekulu Layout.
The Independence Layout was planned to accommodate the headquarters of the three arms of government viz the Executive, the Legislator, and the Judiciary

The church where the oba of Benin is the spiritual leader

The Holy Aruosa Church!
:
Known far and wide and claimed to be the oldest Church is Africa, this is an unusual Church where tradition and religion are practiced and worshipers are said to have a direct contact with God without going through any intermediary like Jesus like other Churches
:
On Akpakpava Road in the heart of Benin City, the Edo State capital, is a church founded over 500 years ago. The architectural design of the building tells its story. It does not advertise itself; yet has a large following. The Oba of Benin is its spiritual head, reports Osagie Otabor.
:
The Holy Aruosa Cathedral is to the Bini people what the Church of England is to the English people; no wonder it is referred to as the Church of Benin.
:
Members of the Holy Arousa are different from flocks of other religious bodies: they are seldom seen sharing pamphlets to convert members or inviting people to the church. The church leaders do not hold crusades or revival services to convert ‘souls’, neither do they invite people to experience miracles.
:
Legend has it that the church was located at the place because it was the spot the Bini had direct contact with Osanobua (God) long before the coming of the European explorers and missionaries.

According to the folklore, a powerful spiritual leader known as Okhuaihe was said to have offered to personally take the peoples’ plea to God as a result of drought and pestilence that had infected the land. He gave up his life during one of the prayer sessions. He was expected to return and bring succour to the people.

As the story goes, the people continued their prayers waiting for Okhuaihe’s return but rather than his return, they got a huge fireball that descended from the sky. At the point where the ball of fire dropped, a huge black stone was found and a place of worship was built there.

During our expedition, we took a boat ride through the large sea on a quest to discovering more about the land.

The 350 steps lake of Ado Awaye

The 350 steps that leads to the Great suspended lake of Ado Awaye..

The suspended lake is housed on one of the crests of rocks commonly referred to in surveyor’s language as the “sleeping lion”.Similarly, the 350 steps leading to the top of the hill housing the suspended/ hanging lake takes about an hour to climb. The route to the lake contains many shrines and notable historical spots that make a tourist delight.

While the rocky outcrop can be climbed to gain full view of the whole range of hills laying towards the Benin Republic boarder.People who have succeeded in climbing to a point called by the inhabitants “Esekan Iku” meaning “the verge of death” writes their names with pieces of stone on the rock. The inhabitants lived on the hill and the lake remains a source of water to them. The most wonderful thing about this lake is that, it never dries and it retains the same volume of water even during rainy season.
Evidence of past civilization is many in this nature’s gift, there are broken crucibles of earthen pots and other archeological remains. The geographical axiom of the “higher you go, the cooler it becomes” is manifested on the lake. The beauty of the hill is seen in the thick vegetation which remains evergreen all through the year. The suspended lake is a large slopping rocky plain, which can be developed into picnic/camping site. On top of the hill, one gets a panoramic view of the beautiful scene

The Suspended lake of Ado Awaye

Ado Awaye lake is a geologic wonder and is popular for its awe-inspiring beauty.
:

The fact that Ado Awaye is one of the only two Suspended Lakes in the whole world makes it an instant destination choice for tourists. The other suspended lake, Hanging Lake lies in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado.

:
The Ado Awaye lake is located on Iyake Mountains that sprawl around the sleepy town of Ado Awaye. The journey to the lake on the mountain top is not one for the faint hearted. A stair of over 369 steps leads through a bush path before it disappears which leaves you climbing till you get to the mountain top.
:
It takes about one hour of rigorous climbing to get to the mountain top. Locals claim the mountains were homes to immigrant Awori dwellers that chose the mountain top as refuge from rampaging Dahomey Armies in the 19th century.
:
Iyake Lake is the most prominent attraction on the mountains. It is a diameter shaped lake with green like water. No one knows the depth of the lake although locals say some foreign tourists who attempted to establish its depth lost their lives in the process.
Many folktales surround the lake.
:
It is believed that the lake leads to another world. The lake is also credited with mysterious powers to solve personal and health problems.
Many visitors go away with bottles of the water which they believe contains medicinal properties and spiritual  abilities.
